Description: The Uitenhage Public Subscription Library opened in 1858. It grew out of a Reading Society that was established in 1825. The library was first housed in a building in Market Street, but moved to the new Town Hall building in 1884. In 1902, a purpose-built library building in Caledon Street. opened its doors to the public.
