de Kelder this evening: the room attractive and the staff, too. Also v. polite. But, the 2 dishes I had were remarkably similar given one was sailfish & the other kudu. Both salty and overly sweet, and while the sailfish was meant to be raw (gravlax) the kudu was completely flaccid. Both had been macerated in a salt/sugar compound with no other flavoring. Foolishly, I ate the gravlax, thinking that in combination with bread, or yoghurt, tomato or arugula -- it would yield something delicious. It never did. The kudu I sent back. On its return it was still as flaccid as a ... and just as unappealing. Someone had been tipped off that I had pushed my plate away and was quietly sipping my pinotage. At that point, even though it was offered, I really didn't have the heart (or stomach) to try anything else. Perhaps the 9.5 rating I saw is justified in some way which remains a mystery to me. de Kelder is a great restaurant -- as long as you don't eat.
