Is There a Sinister Reason for Holding Public Hearings 300 km's Away?

Letters to the Editorwww.MyPE.co.za: Tomorrow morning (30 July) at 9:00 am, I am attending the public hearing for the approval of a gambling licence in Parliament Street in Port Elizabeth. Although the venue and business in question is to be in Port Elizabeth, the Eastern Cape Gambling and Betting Board has seen it fit to have the public hearing in Beacon Bay, East London, more than 300km away. This makes one wonder whether the board is too lazy to do their jobs properly and hear the concerns of residents and stakeholder that will be affected, or whether there is another, more sinister reason as to why they are making it as difficult as possible for taxpayers to be heard?

Councillor Jeremy Davis, the ward councillor that covers Central in PE, has brought this injustice to my attention. I have subsequently decided to represent the voices of the more than 57 objectors that have not been able to get time off work and make the more than 600km return trip, all at their own expense, to be able to stand up and say their piece.

It is imperative that the various boards and departments participate with the community when making decisions as to where various licenses such as liquor and/or gambling licenses are to be granted, it is after all what taxpayers pay tax for. To make it as inaccessible as this screams of either incompetence or corruption.

I will be asking a question in the Legislature for the MEC to explain the reasoning for not taking public hearings to the people concerned.
