The GIZA Challenge Yacht Regatta will be
sailed in Algoa Bay, Port Elizabeth and hosted by the Algoa Bay Yacht
Club from the 1st to the 4th of May 2008. The GIZA
Challenge is the Algoa Bay Yacht Club's premiere annual regatta
attracting a strong fleet of local yachts as well as entries from
around South Africa.
Yachts will be entered in three
different classes; Class 1, Class 2 and Class 3. Incorporated within
these three classes will be the Pacer 27 Sport boat Eastern Province
Championships and IRC Racing Class. The Pacer 27 Sport Boat is a new
Durban, South African built yacht with an asymmetric spinnaker and very
fast. Notable local yacht's entered are Warrior,
a 60 foot Simonis design owned by Phil Gutsche, a number of J27
Class Racing boats. ABYC
Sailing Commodore, Alan Straton promises lots of on water action,
legendary hospitality for visiting sailors and spectators and great
exposure for Port Elizabeth from Supersport, who will be filming the
GIZA Challenge.
The First day's racing is
scheduled to start at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday the 1st of May and a good
view of the action from Shark Rock Pier and along the beachfront,
depending on the wind direction. From the 2nd to the 4th of May racing
will start at 11:00 a.m. daily.
The target is to sail eight
races over the course of the four days and most of them will be
windward leeward or 'sausage' shaped courses. The 'sausage' course
provides a large amount of photo opportunities from the beach as one of
the legs of the 'sausage' course is a downwind spinnaker run.
Visitors are welcome to view
the day's activities from the Algoa Bay Yacht Club premises in the Port
Elizabeth Harbour.
Evening activities are planned
to keep the sailors entertained and fed starting with snacks, Oysters,
a steel band from Lawson Brown and local muso Glenn Fuller at the
Opening Ceremony on Wednesday the 30th of April. Each of the following
evenings are themed in terms of food and drink. The prizegiving will
take place on Sunday Afternoon the 4th of May when the various class
winners will be presented with medals and trophies, including a 100
year old solid silver trophy.
GIZA Group of Companies CEO, Danny Tenner
said; "As a sailor myself, and with many sea miles under my belt,
the GIZA Challenge is my opportunity to put
back into the sport of yachting and highlight the valuable contribution
that ABYC makes with their Development Sailing program."
